Model Mayhem: Virtual meeting place for models and photographers

Modelmayhem.com is a bit like a café, bar or club where models, photographers and other industry members can meet, muse and exchange info – only without the accoutrements or the need to put on a lick of mascara or step outside your own front door.

You have to register to use the Model Mayhem site - and membership is three-tiered: Basic, Premium and VIP – with a price scale that ranges from free and up. Joining the mayhem involves filling in info and being assessed by the Model Mayhem Gatekeepers, who essentially sift the wheat from the spammers. The site works a bit like the major online directories such as Craigslist – only orientated towards the modeling world. Mayhem-seeking models and photographers can post ads, browse listings of each other, stylists, make-up artists, designers, event planners, even body painters and filter their searches by area, zip code or radius.

Modelmayhem.com also allows its members to post casting calls, travel notices or availability notices. The site also features forums that welcome feedback, general industry banter and an open topic discussion. Model Mayhem contests include pic of the day and photographer of the week - all competitions are free to view but only members can enter. There's even an online store where you can get your MM gear and prints for comp cards and portfolios with discounts for Model Mayhem members.

Easy to navigate and browse around, the site embodies simple, straightforward search and offer. What you see is essentially, what you get and the tone is professional and sassy, which is encouraging to those who are wary of shark-sites and deterrent to those who think they can get away with what they please in the virtual jungle. The range of models, photographers, stylists and others featured on Modelmayhem.com is quite the spectrum, and mature models, glamour models, and amateur and avant-garde photographers can see and be seen here.
