The ideal of beauty (art project)

Beauty is subjective. It is a variable standard of beauty ideals that are present in a given culture. It is a socially constructed notion that physical attractiveness is the most important asset and something everyone should strive to achieve and maintain. I am convinced that these standards exist due to what the media display in advertisements and that it influences our perspective. Add the fact that images in these advertisements are often extremely photoshopped and these beauty standards become unrealistic and impossible to attain. As a photographer I learned that a self-confident appearance in a photo can be much more powerful than any beauty ideal. I want to illustrate this statement by photographing people that do not comply to beauty ideals. For this project I’m looking for imperfections like scars, missing body parts, asymmetrical faces, birthmarks, vitiligo, freckles, etc.. Photos will be taken on location in Rotterdam in the months June, July and August. Please leave a message if you would like to participate, so we can plan a date and time.
